The Wall is as Soft as Lace.

Lieve Sylvie -little star- we missen je enorm ! Happy Birthday ! XXX

‘Rhythm is a Drawer’ by Sylvie De Meerleer

Artist In Residence, Sylvie De Meerleer is the first Master from Bruges showing a solo exhibition in Kunstenruimte Bogardenkapel. She’s also the first artist to present her work of art in the new, temporary Exporuimte Biekorf. Her drawings and collages reveal her quest for patterns in nature. Rhythm, recurrence and movement are the key concepts by which she creates, in the image of nature, a world packed with its splendour of shapes.

The entrance hall of the Exporuimte Biekorf also displays her in situ work ‘The Wall is as Soft as Lace’ which she realized as the Artist In Residence. In the passageway, Sylvie exhibits work with which she became the laureate at SANT2018 and there’re also some footage shown of the artist, made by photographer Emilie Bonjé.
The spiral shape brings us right back to the concepts of infinity and eternity, an ever-changing, transitional landscape. It’s the kind of shape appearing everywhere in nature and to be found all over the cosmos and in man-made objects. The circles in the final outcome are reminiscent of the year rings in the cross section of a tree stump, or of a drop softly falling into water, but also of lace, which is actually a familiar story for Bruges. Through her labour-intensive intervention, the paint’s top layer has been shedding of the wall at certain spots. It shows subtle traces of underlying work from previous artists, reappearing now on the surface and such as, becoming embedded in the work of art ‘The Wall is as Soft as Lace’.

Camouflage, Behind the Abstract Pattern.
Art - Nature - War.

24.11.2019 - 29.03.2020

The concept of camouflage involves much more than a particular type of abstract motif. The exhibition Camouflage: Art – Nature – War at the FeliXart Museum offers a historical overview of the various tactics and motives involved in camouflage, and examines and reflects on the theme of camouflage in art and in our contemporary societies. With the advent of facial recognition systems and the risks of invasion of privacy, the subject is more than ever topical.

The abstract camouflage patterns we are so familiar with today took shape on an experimental basis during the First World War, at the same time as Belgian artists were also experimenting with abstraction. The exhibition presents a surprising and original combination of specimens of natural camouflage, military objects and works of art. It highlights camouflage’s relation to nature, the phenomena of optical illusion and the ambiguity of images.
